DescriptionI ran into Janice Chiang a couple of years ago at NYC comic con, and after speaking with her, and getting her to autograph a John Carpenter's comic she had worked on, I realized many of the comics I enjoyed, and collected, she had a hand in creating. Also, she is really friendly and nice to speak with. So it was especially meaningful to be able to pick up this inner cover of her.Fast forward to last month's Cosmic Con where I met the very talented writer, author, editor, Danny Fingeroth, and was able to pick up a few fumetti pages published in one of my favorite series. Here are some questions I asked Danny, and his responses. Also, check out his latest book Jack Ruby: The Many Faces of Oswald's Assassin. So I was wondering can you give me a little history on how you came up with the idea of the fumetti pages? "Three comics were selected to sell "direct only" viacomics shops (Ka-Zar, Moon Knight, and, I think Micronauts), not to newsstands, which were the dominant sales outlets at the time, the earlier days of comics shops. These would have no outside ads (but could have house ads), and so the inside covers were available. Not sure who came up with the idea to do photo-funnies, but they were something that had existed for decades. The cover price was, as I recall, higher than a standard 32 page comic because of the lack of ads. This also enabled us to do wraparound covers, since there were no paid ads on the back cover. I don't remember what the other two titles did with the extra pages. But the idea was to see if a product designed only for comics shops was viable." Was the acting and posing for the photos difficult? Was it hard to get everyone aboard with the project? "I don't recall any of them being especially hard to direct. They were mostly fun to do." Why did you decided to do it only in the Ka-zar books? "Editor Louise Jones (now Simonson) and writer Bruce Jones (no relation to her) had worked together at Warren Publications, so maybe they did photo-funnies there? National Lampoon had been doing them, and Marvel had been doing them on Crazy magazine, as well as on numerous humorous photo-funnies magazines Stan Lee wrote, and the format was popular in other countries. So there was precedent for doing them. I don't know the process of how it was decided that they would be a regular thing in Ka-Zar. I was the assistant and wasn't always consulted on everything." How was it received by the readership? and why was it discontinued? "I don't recall any objections from readers. I'm sure they were at least glad to have to deal with fewer ads. I imagine that someone in a financial department decided that putting out direct-only material without outside ads wasn't a viable way to sell profitable comics. But I don't really know." Thanks Danny for your insight! I'll be posting the rest down the road. Social/Sharing |
