Time for more art from my Original Comic Art Unboxing with Ruben DaCollector.

This one was a long time coming. I've wanted a Howard Chaykin Jonah Hex ever since I saw this cover. I believe Mitch was handling his art at the time and I waited patiently for him to post this cover for sale. It never came up for sale publicly (or at least not that I saw). I thought about going the commission route but at the time Chaykin didn't like doing commissions and he charged appropriately. I ruled out that option. So I waited and was always on the search for the right Chaykin piece for my collection. A number of great pieces came up but I could never pull the trigger.

One fine evening while watching the Dueling Dealers show, Mike Burkey offered a large Kaluta Shadow pencil piece. Wanting a better look at the piece, I did a google image search for it. In a bit of serendipity the original art to this Jonah Hex cover appeared in the search. I clicked the image and it was an eBay auction! I thought to myself damn! How did I miss this auction, thinking it was an old ended listing. It was not, it was a newly posted listing. I only hesitated to confirm it was for real and then promptly hit the buy it now.

Excited to finally have a Chaykin piece and it's a friggin JONAH HEX (his only Jonah Hex cover I believe)! This piece belongs in a place of honor next to my Sienkwiewicz cover from the same series.

Judging by the published cover this is an older Jonah Hex who is still familiar with his two companions: One was death itself� The other, the acrid smell of gunsmoke.

I know how much this means to you, given that Jonah Hex has long been one of your favorite comic characters of all time. The rugged, hard edged storytelling that defines Hex as a character is on full display here, with Chaykin’s signature expressive linework and dynamic composition capturing that raw, unforgiving Western atmosphere. I wish he had dropped a background in, but oh well. The story of how you stumbled upon it just adds to the fun of owning it!

It's a great feeling when you find THAT cover from THAT artist of THAT character that you've long been searching for. So cool that it was a Chaykin cover in this case!
