Description

Holy smokes, another item checked off my OA bucket list! My first reading of Hawkworld was as a teenager in the 90s and I had zero context about the characters. It was grittier then Batman at the time and so unlike much of the DC that wasn't destined to get folded into the Vertigo imprint.

So back when I started to collect art I knew I had to have a page from this series. They'd come up at auction from time to time, but not quite the right page or way more then I was willing to spend. So fast forward to the fall 2024 Comic Art Live a couple pages hit and this one checks the boxes. Katar and Shayera taking Byth down in the climatic battle at the end of the series!

What I didn't know is that it was done as twice-up size of 13 X 19.5; this thing is huge!

The execution has an almost complete feel when it's Alcatena inks. As dark and mysterious as some of the most grim and gritty comics of their time. I think Truman and Alcatena took their cues from Hawkman when drawn by guys like Totleben and Bissette and fit into Justice League Dark stories.

Fantastic page! Ostrander and Truman knocked this whole mini out of the park. This page is a such a great representation of everything they did to deepen and evolve the Hawks.
