Description

GI Joe, A Real American Hero #37 from 1985 by Marvel Comics. 1st appearance of Flint, Footloose, Tomax & Xamot. Set against the panorama of the big top, G. I. Joe Flint jumps off a mini tank towards Xamot, who is standing at the top of a loop, planning to shoot the Joes as they drive by. Mike Zeck and John Beatty open fire with this incredible Joe cover and all the details are there, down to the last bolt in the tread of the tank. This is also the first appearance of the G. I. Joe mini-tank.

On a personal note, the first comic books I ever got were a 3-pack of G.I. Joe #21-23 from Toy's R Us. I asked my mom to let me have a subscription & she agreed (anything to get me to read more! lol.) Since #24 was already out, the first comics I got through the mail that first year were #25-36. This is the first comic I got in the mail through my second subscription when I renewed. Getting this cover is a personal GRAIL PIECE for me from my childhood and I couldn't be happier! :)

Neato!  Featured in one of the TV commercials that advertised the coming of Tomax and Xamot with this cover scene animated!  It also cross promoted their upcoming toys, the animated series, and seeing a comic book on TV was a big deal.

Loved GI Joe as a kid. Tomax & Xamot leaders of the Crimson Guard. Great memories! Congrats!

I am convinced that having a cover scene in top of a roller coaster is as good as it gets. Add in Zeck and it can't be beat! Congrats!!

Wow! Killer GI Joe cover! Fantastic art by Mike Zeck and John Beatty! What a terrific action scene of GI Joe Flint in action! Mike Zeck was always so good at portraying action scenes like this one. It's a little over the top--GI Joe leaping off a mini-tank onto a roller coaster track?--But that was always the thing that made the comic such a favorite! As always Zeck has made the scene more real by loading tons of detail into his drawing. I love all the gear GI Joe is wearing from his finely detailed M-16 rifle to his sideholster, to the treads on his boots! That kind of attention to detail is the hallmark of Zeck and contributes to why we could see a crazy scene like this and believe it! Fantastic pick-up, congrats!

A great leaping pose, with the angle and composition reminding me a little of Trimpe's '70s western covers, strangely. There's a lot of storytelling going on in that image, and the viewing angle is excellent. Nice cover.
