DescriptionTalk about a check-off for the old collector's bucket list. Like many of you, from my earliest collecting days, my checklist of artists and OA I wanted to own has changed and evolved. But the two guys that were always at the top, Alex Ross and Jim Lee. I bought my first Ross in 2017, before selling it to buy the Secret Wars cover in 2021 that I own now.Really soon after I upgraded my Alex Ross, I set my sites on getting a Jim Lee. I sold off a significant portion of my collection to raise funds so I'd be ready when the right Lee came along. I emailed Albert, other dealers, fellow collectors and even Scott Williams, trying to find a Jim Lee that would work with my budget. Tricky part was how picky I was and wanting to stay under $10K... I only wanted a splash or a cover, I only wanted DC or Marvel work and didn't want a female character whose proportions and wardrobe would lead to funny looks from my wife and daughter. I also wanted a piece inked by Williams, no other inkers accepted, and it needed to be a complete image, not a single character with no background and 80 percent of the art board just being untouched canvas. So when this one popped up on HA, it checked all the boxes. My parents dressed me as Superman for my first Halloween in 1980. My son was born this January and he'll likely get the same treatment. The Superman movies were I'm sure the first Superhero films I ever saw. After waiting four years for the right Lee to appear, I'd have probably gone hard over a forgettable hero or villain. But to get a character like General Zod with a hint of Harley Quinn... I'm speechless. I met Jim Lee one time at Heroes Con in 1994. I brought a fully loaded short box of comics for him to sign, only to discover a line wrapping around the convention center and Lee only signing one book per attendee. I had him sign my copy UXM #248 and kept it in an Ultra-PRO comic case displayed on my bedroom bookshelf for the rest of my teens. This whole journey is what I love about the hobby. Luck plays such a big part and making hard decisions to let stuff go in the hopes something better is just over the horizon. HA.com description: Jim Lee and Scott Williams Suicide Squad #2 Splash Page 13 Original Art (DC, 2016). "Kneel before ZOD." Too bad there's nothing left of Captain Boomerang to comply with that order! The Suicide Squad is stunned by the incineration of their teammate as Zod emerges from the "cosmic object" they were sent to recover on this awesome title splash from the legendary art team of Lee and Williams. Ink over graphite on DC Bristol board with an image area of 10.5" x 15.75". Whiteout touch-ups and light smudging/handling wear. Signed by the art team in the bottom margin. In Excellent condition.
