DescriptionThis wonderful original Star Spangled Banter cartoon by Bill Mauldin appeared in the March 13, 1942 edition of the Camp Barkeley News, which as the masthead stated, included the 45th Division News. Camp Barkeley, near Abilene, Texas, was the WWII training grounds for the 45th Division, and where Mauldin was stationed at the time. Coincidentally, this was the same month that the famed illustrator Rockwell Kent visited the camp. Mauldin interviewed Kent for the next issue of the camp newspaper.Mauldin was 21 years old when he drew this cartoon. This piece was drawn with brush and ink, but it's a much cartoonier approach than we'd see from Mauldin just a couple years later. Mauldin's growth as a cartoonist was pretty incredible. Just a year and half earlier he was drawing such basic stuff for Arizona Highways, you might not believe it was the same cartoonist. The brush line is really supple and Mauldin's figures have a wonderfully relaxed sense about them. I love that upper horizontal panel, with the long line of trucks and figures. There are some really nice contrasts throughout the piece as well. Social/Sharing |
