DescriptionOne of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in comic art collecting is this: make a list. No matter how impossible or out of reach a piece may seem—write it down. You never know what might happen in this hobby.As a lifelong Barry Windsor-Smith fan, I once made a list of dream pages from my favorite titles he’s touched over his legendary career. Some pages felt like long shots—locked in black hole collections or priced into the stratosphere. But if collecting has taught me anything, it’s that the unexpected happens all the time. That was exactly the case with this page—one of five Weapon X pages I had saved on my list. When my friend Amir told me it was available, I honestly couldn’t believe it. I hesitated. I overthought it. I even tried to talk myself out of it. Then he told me it was Nick letting it go—someone I had just had dinner with a few months back—and that made it all the more surreal. In the end, we worked it out. And I’m deeply thankful for friends who look out for me in this hobby. The reveal itself happened totally unplanned, live on Ruben DaCollector’s show. My buddy Southern Comic Geek kept asking for art, then Rick Welch asked, “What is Carl’s #1 art want?” And in that moment—I had to show it. Because this was it. Bad @$$! BWS Weapon X art is the top of that awesome era of Marvel art in the late '80's to early '90's. My favorite era.

You should plan and throw a party for obtaining this awesome BWS work! The narration is clinical, but they can't convey the emotions in each one of Barry's lines.

Man, THIS is what collecting is all about, isn't it? I mean the art, sure, but even more than that, it’s the connections, the serendipity and especially the community. Revealing this live on my show was so surprising and fun!
This splash has such a raw, primal intensity to it. The face-off between Weapon X and the Siberian Tiger is so classic. But it isn't just a masterpiece by Barry Windsor-Smith. To me, it’s a symbol of what happens when collecting passion meets patience and maybe a little bit of fate for good measure! Major props to Amir for tipping you off, and a big shoutout to Nick for letting it go to the right collector. Also, big up to Jason (aka Southern Comic Geek) and Rick Welch for teeing up the reveal on the show. Thanks, guys! It's everyone coming together the way they did to help you acquire the art, Carl, and then reveal it live, that shows this hobby is about so much more than just ink on paper if you want (and allow) it to be. Kudos, man!
