DescriptionGeorge described his process for this pre-OAX 2025 commission at time stamp 1:16, https://tinyurl.com/5n8ca6an."This texture (i.e., the plane's) is me emulating the technique of (Italian comic artist) Dino Battaglia. I never knew how he did it and then a book came out where they described him as using cotton balls and ink and then just patting it. So I've done that here. And then I've gone in with a Posca white paint marker to go in here (i.e., on Enemy Ace) and bring the light back out and then sort of distressing the surface of the plane like it's been hit and messed up." A major piece in the collection! This is a cornerstone for any war art collector! It's methodically done like an art director of a hollywood production.

Absolutely incredible! The tonal work and the detail in the coat and the airplane fabrics, a joy to look at.

This is very impressive. The plane looks almost tactile, and I love von Hammer's pose.

Wow, this is outstanding, Peter! You already scored big time with the previous Pratt piece and now you're just doubling down! The piece of the week, even though the week just started. Kudos!

As I said when I first saw this, AWESOME! George's attention to detail and graytones is outstanding. I love all the work he put into the Fokker DR 1. Congrats Peter!

I loved seeing the pieces that Pratt did for OAX and I was hoping that someone would ask for Enemy Ace. I really appreciate the daguerreotype feel to this. Thanks and congrats!

Great comment about the daguerreotype vibe! I didn't realize that. Hand to forehead. Thank you, ML!

George is such an experimentor and excells at any medium he picks up. He was the the person who introducted me to Battaglia's work when I was a student back in 2000 and we were corresponding via email. So now living in Europe I often see work that never makes it to the US. When that book came out on Battaglia a few years ago in conjunction with an art show of Battaglia's work it Italy I sent George some pics. It was completing the art circle so to speak, and I was thrilled to see him introduce that cotton ball effect into his work. This piece is a perfect exammple of that technique. Congrats on such a stunner.

Wow! Thank you for your excellent comment, Matt! Your insight as one of his former students now living in Europe helps me better appreciate the piece and the Battaglia angle. Like you, part of what draws me to George's work is his fearless innovation and excellence in using different techniques and media. Thanks again!

An amazing protrait of Herr von Hammer! The texture of the piece brings an image of a grainy old daguerreotype to mind.
