What better opportunity than the election of Pope Leo XIV to show this amazing piece of art by the talented and almost fogotten Luigi Togliatto?

Luigi Togliatto (1921 - 2014), also known as Luigi Togliatto Amateis, was an Italian painter and illustrator, who worked for many publishers between the Fifties and the Seventies, and also for the Church.

Pope Leo X (1475 - 1521) was born Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici, the second son of Lorenzo il Magnifico, and reigned from 1513 to 1521; he was a patron for artists such as Raffaello.

Leone X, edizioni Paravia, 22 x 31 cm, signed LTA under the horse's tail (Luigi Togliatto Amateis). On the back: "129... Leone X entrò in Firenze... cavalcando una bianca chinèa..." (Leo X entered in Florence... riding a white chinèa).

Looks so good with thick layers of paint that give weight and gravitas when Pope Leo X leads the charge. It's painted to have historical significance showing the subject at their heroic best.
