DescriptionBatman RIP The Missing Chapter Part 1:Immediately following the events of Batman RIP, Bruce and Alfred are in the Batcave reflecting on how Bruce almost died several times and was at the mercy of the Joker and the Black Glove. Then Bruce hops into the Bat-sub to return to the scene of the helicopter crash to find the of bodies of Dr. Hurt and Michael Lane, the "Bat-Devil". Batman is maskless throughout this issue because Dr. Hurt cursed the cape and cowl. Bruce is hesitant to wear it due to Bruce believing Dr. Hurt is the incarnation of the devil. "The next time you wear it will be your last!" In fact, the next time Batman wore the cape and cowl, he disappeared in Final Crisis. This is the significance of the top left panel. The cape and cowl draped over a chair. Batman #701 is the first time Bruce Wayne is featured in the pages of Batman after being absent for more than a year! During this time Bruce is presumed dead. Dick Grayson and Damian Wayne are Batman and Robin. Bruce Wayne is lost in time and his stories were told in the pages of Batman: Return of Bruce Wayne, also written by Grant Morrison. Batman 701 is a backstory that bridges the events following Batman RIP leading into the Final Crisis crossover. After Bruce's return, he takes Batman abroad in the pages of Batman Incorporated. Bruce Wayne doesn't return to the Batman title full time until the launch of the New 52 in 2011. That makes Batman #701 and #702 the last time Bruce Wayne is featured in the first volume of Batman. Batman volume 1 ends at issue #713. Shout out to Tony Daniel! Social/Sharing |

I like how the pictures matches the words in the last panel as Bruce submerges deep down in his doubts.

Bruce returns to the main title! that middle shot of Bruce and Alfred is great, and you get a Bat-Sub half splash! Nice page from Grant Morrisson's era on the character.
