I've been a fan of Loebs since I first saw his name credited for "dialogue" in The Maxx. I always thought that was an odd credit to give someone. Anyways....it wasn't until I stumbled upon an issue of Wolverine MacAlistaire in a $1 bins that I even knew he was also an artist on top of being a dialoguer.

Flash forward to 2005ish and somehow I found out about a benefit auction that Clifford Meth and Neal Adams were putting on to benefit Loebs. I picked up the Heroes and Villains benefit sketchbook, but haven't seen it in years. I wish I could go back in time to some of those benefit Auctions Meth put on for Colan, Loebs, Simons, Cockrum, etc...

This piece is a random stumble on Heritage. I recognized the name and it was cheap. I definitely did not buy for the content, but it is growing on me. It's from 1980, so that's a year or so before he was ever published. It's signed William Francis Loebs, so it is from before he got Messnered.

Did you know that Loebs had his right arm amputated at the shoulder when he was 13 days old? Well now you do. Does it make you look at his art any differently?

Usually I'd expect the Fairy to be prettier than the Troll, but in this case I can't quite tell! Nice to learn a little more about the artist.

It's in line with his art from Journey. Lots of rich detail in the pointillism he's using here in reverse negative.
