Description

Only the sixth Sunday in this series! The strip pre-dated Winsor McCay's more well-known Little Nemo in Slumberland by a full two years. In fact, it pre-dates his other famous strips of Little Sammy Sneeze and Dream of the Rarebit Fiend by a year as well. This series of text stories with illustrations had a recurring theme of explaining how certain animals came to be. This episode is titled "How the Pelican Got His Pouch". McCay would also be the father of animation with his ground-breaking animated Gertie the Dinosaur cartoon in 1914. Very few of these originals are in private hands -- we have auctioned this example in years past, but have only seen one other one in our history.
