DescriptionI’ve probably owned this one for 25 years so it’s probably a good time to share. I must say that I absolutely LOVED Steve Skroce 90s production. On Amazing spider-Man, Wolverine, Uncanny X-Men, Youngblood with Alan Moore, Cable and X-Men and of course Gambit which he launched with Fabian Nicieza. His art was super fresh, dynamic and crisp and he was a very good visual storyteller.I confess that I don’t remember much from that series save for the multiple covers to the first issue and Skroce’s involvement. EXCEPT this particular moment in the first issue where, Gambit is trapped in some kind of solidifying goo by the X-Cutioner (a character created by Jason Pearson). How will he escape you ask? Well, he’s been chewing gum the whole issue and Gambit’s power is to kinetically charge inanimate objects in order have them explode, isn’t? How about he charges his gum and spit in the face of his foe? This page is the result of what I thought was a very clever and novel way from Mr Nicieza to use his character’s powers. I must say that I was overjoyed to find THE page from THE sequence I remember the most from that series. This is rare in our hobby and needs to be savoured. The sense of impact in the first panel is just insane. By the X-Cutioner impacted body position, to he use of light from the radiating gum, speed lines and impact effect behind him, you really get an “ouch” moment here. And the impact is decompressed further in the second panel as its consequences are shown as the villain is just flying through the lorry’s windshield. All the glass debris and fumes really enhance that super impactful and dramatic moment. The sense of detail is truly Darrow-esque (and the connection between the two artists was further established on the design part of the Matrix movies). One could argue that by positioning the action in the first two panels from right to left, Skroce disturbed the natural flow of the page. And yet, I wonder if it was not done on purpose here in the sense that going against the flow, he forces the reader to slow down if not stop and the forceful impact of the sequence is probably furthered by the fact that the action reverses said natural flow. A GREAT storytelling device if indeed it was foreplaned. Then we get two panels on Rogue flying to the rescue of her beau (…), closing in as the lorry in which he is held captive derails out of the speedway. Just a top high action sequence from a then on the rise artist who would later on reach higher artistic tops, either in the movie or comic industry. Let’s take notice of Hunter’s inks that really favour the crispness of Skroce’s pencils. Social/Sharing |

Gambit can certainly do more than walk and chew gum at the same time! What a cool sequence with the gum explosive use of his powers. Congrats on getting the art page for the specific moment you remember so well fron this 90s number 1 issue.

From the top of my head, I have another similar page to post (of THE moment for me in that particular series) but I already have the chance to own several of those in the collection.

Kudos for finding THE page that is most seared into your brain from this sequence! Amazing that you've already owned it for 25 years! I was personally never a huge Gambit fan. I thought he was alright, but I didn't love him. But I have to take this opportunity to say that I finally got around to watching Deadpool/Wolverine a few days ago and in all honesty, although they should've tweaked the costume a little bit (made the purple chest plate darker and not so bright) in a couple of areas (the head piece, even if true to the comics, looked cheesy), Gambit otherwise was pretty badass! I especially liked the card throwing/exploding effects and also thought he did a really nice job with the Cajun accent. So yes, believe it or not, I enjoyed the live action version of Gambit more than I ever did the comic book version! I'm sure I'm in the minority in that regard, but who knows, this may now make me appreciate him more in his comic book appearances. What I know for sure is that I'm actually hoping and looking forward for Marvel to bring him back in a future movie, be it X-Men or just as another guest appearance in someone else's film!

While I (truly) love to see your comments on pieces I post, I strongly believe this one is written with the sole purpose of annoying me and have me rant again 😊
Which other reason could you possibly have to mention the appearance of Gambit in a movie I did not (need to) know he was in and will never ever watch except if I’m gifted the original art page previous to this one in order to do so?
To make it clear(er) and public once again, I don’t care about Gambit or any particular character, I care about CREATORS.
I.E. I would buy a NFL PRO comic written by Alan Moore, a Toxic Avengers one written by Warren Ellis, an Awesome Possum drawn by Michael Golden or a Bat Dung one if drawn by Jason Pearson (and the list is endless) 😉

Nope, that was a 100% serious comment. You have to remember that YOU may not care about characters, but most people do.

Congratulations! I can see why you wanted this. Skroce shows all the skill that made him a such an in-demand storyboard and concept artist.

I hope for his sake that he didn't produce storyboards with that level of detail but indeed he shows off his great skills here (and on this series).

Doesn't look like he took much detail off!

This would be in the time period after he did work for The Matrix. Non stop action and quick storyboarding pace by Skroce!

All the beautiful lines and tiny details scream Skroce and it was. Cheers on this fun Gambit page.

Steve's work on Gambit was the high water mark for his career in my memories. Nice to see this page here on CAF!
