Description

Penciler Herb Trimpe and inker John Severin collaborated on this page from the dawn of the Marvel Bronze Age that was published in Incredible Hulk #131 (1970). It features Jim Wilson, a new member of the Hulk supporting cast, who made his first appearance in this story on the preceding page (also available in this auction). Wilson is an African-American teenager who was introduced during a brief period when both Marvel and DC were striving to be more "relevant" by introducing minority characters into their titles. He served as a replacement for long-time supporting character Rick Jones, who had become a key character in the Captain Marvel title. In 1979, it was revealed that Jim was the nephew of Sam Wilson, AKA the Falcon. Wilson was MIA during the 1980s but returned during the popular Peter David/Dale Keown run in Incredible Hulk #388 (1991) where it was revealed that he was HIV-positive. The AIDS crisis was affecting many families in the early 1990s and this was Marvel's opportunity to show that it had an impact in their fictional universe as well. Tragically, Wilson passed away from complications from AIDS in Incredible Hulk #420 (1994).

Those John Severin inks are fantastic! Severin would go on to doing Cracked Magazine where he'd do comedy, but it really takes a good understanding of how to draw seriously to be able to do caricature. Here, he adds a lot of serious emotion to embellish Trimpe's artwork.
