Description

Original Ink Illustration by Charles Schneeman
Astounding Science Fiction, May 1942 (Vol. XXIX, No. 3)
“Encounter” – Illustration for “Asylum” by A. E. van Vogt – Appeared on Page 19

This is the original published pen-and-ink drawing by Charles Schneeman, titled “Encounter,” created to illustrate “Asylum,” a novella written by A. E. van Vogt, one of the central figures of science fiction’s Golden Age. The artwork appeared on page 19 of the May 1942 issue of Astounding Science Fiction.

This issue is considered one of the most significant in genre history, featuring:

– Van Vogt’s “Asylum,” the featured cover story, which explores a clash between super-intelligent beings and human society—a hallmark of van Vogt’s layered, cerebral storytelling.

– Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation,” the very first story in his groundbreaking Foundation series, debuting the concept of psychohistory and introducing Hari Seldon—marking the birth of one of the most influential sagas in science fiction.

– Robert A. Heinlein’s “Beyond This Horizon,” a serialized novel envisioning a genetically advanced society, blending futurism, philosophy, and action—a cornerstone of Heinlein’s early canon.

The illustration measures approximately 10″ × 5″ and is archivally mounted, likely in the 1940s or ’50s. It comes from the estate of A. E. van Vogt, giving it exceptional provenance.

Original published science fiction artwork from this formative era (c. 1939–1950) is rare. When linked to a major van Vogt story in an issue that also includes foundational works by Asimov and Heinlein, it becomes a particularly prized piece of the genre’s visual and literary legacy.
