Description:
This is the original production artwork used to create the dust jacket for James H. Schmitz’s 1962 science fiction novel. Featuring a surrealist blend of stylized female figure, lunar landscape, twin clocks, and infinity symbol, the piece reflects the midcentury visual language of genre publishing. The graphite drawing matches the printed jacket in composition but lacks its later-applied rose shading.

Editorial markings include paste-up title lettering, penciled layout notes, crop marks, the notation “BLACK,” a circled “OK LM” approval, and the signature of production staffer Steve Alexander, likely from Torquil’s art department. The piece is annotated “C379” — possibly an internal reference or production batch code.

A rare surviving example of sci-fi dust jacket design with direct ties to the Golden Age of science fiction publishing.
