DescriptionSnow White & Bigby WolfDeath of the Endless Cosplay Commission By Daxiong Ink, watercolor on 11x17 in. Illustration board Not for Sale Austin Daxiong Guo (aka @daxiongart ) is currently one of the most successful artists in Chinese and European comics. He has received a great deal of recognition, including first place at the Shanghai Animation & Comic Competition, Golden Monkey King Award at China international Cartoon and Animation Festival, top honors at the 33rd annual Angoulême International Comics Festival, and Viewer’s Choice Award on ICON 29. He has illustrated the JSA for DC comics and Star Wars for Marvel. This commission was for Snow White & Bigby Wolf from the pages of the multiple Eisner Award winning series FABLES, but incorporating a bit of cosplay: either with Death of the Endless as Snow White or Snow White as Death. I provided Several reference images by Fables cover artist James Jean along with depictions of Death by Michael Kaluta, David Finch, and P. Craig Russell as a sort of style guide. Daxiong chose the Walt Disney version of Snow White as a basis for the cosplay element of the request. Considering the prevalence of apples and their role in Snow White's origin story, the riddle of who is cosplaying who leans a bit more toward Death as Snow than the contrary. The layout is also somewhat reminiscent of a Tarot Card which accentuates the Death inference —though in an admittedly non-traditional form. The Big Bad Wolf, though menacing, is somehow less threatening than the clearly empowered woman whose coyness reads as daring and defiant. I think this cost me about $100 per apple, which is already a bargain compared to his current prices.

Inspired commission choice! I feel like I've seen a couple other commissions of Death cosplaying as another character, and it's a fun take. Also love the suble nod to the Fables #1 cover (assuming it was one of the references). Congrats!
