Description"The Dead Draftees of Regiment Six!" by Michael Fleisher and Russell Carley. Fifth page of the 18-page story. The grifter fleeces the abolitionists but gets a rude awakening when he receives a draft notice. He starts to scheme how to find a someone to take his place in the draft. Jose keeps this talky page moving with a variety of perspectives, panel designs, fluid figures, and wonderfully expressive faces, making what could be boring a pleasure to read. Jose's panorama top panel of the abolitionist tent meeting is an effective opener. I love the grifter's startled reaction of alarm to the draft notice followed by contemplation of how to con his way out of it. The stable boy's sister has a face of sweet innocence. The last panel has nicely nuanced movement - a hint of the grifter stepping toward the tent opening as he puts on his hat and holds the sister's arm to attach himself to her and her errand. If I only had this single page to go on, Mr French should take the identity of Miss Haynes and split town!

The establishing shot is wonderful indeed. But quite frankly, his mastery of composition is in full display here, as each individual panel is a little work of art all its own, so perfectly composed!

Thanks, Rubén! Excellent point! Jose's art for this story screams mastery of composition. What little I've seen of his earlier Charlton and Latin American work seems similarly excellent.

Awesome stuff from JLGL as always! Everything you pointed out is great, I also really like how he did the period piece clothing in particular on this page

Masterful! Jose pencils and inks are the best.
(Thanks for putting this the year in the post, too!)
