DescriptionWhen I joined CAF, I took the moniker “Chaykin Dude” for my gallery because of the influence American Flagg! had on my comics-reading experience. I had been a long-time fan and reader of the Silver Age of DC, especially the Legion of Super-Heroes and The Flash. But reading American Flagg! for the first time was an epiphany. For me, it was the moment when comics grew up. AF! was gritty; full of sex and violence; replete with flawed characters, including a flawed hero; all of it set against the dystopian background of a failed city that has been sold out by the government. There was simply nothing like it that I had ever read before, and it floored me. It started me on a journey to collect Chaykin’s art from the original run. The FasFax page from issue 3 was my first purchase. I’ve since also been lucky enough to score two AF! covers. One thing that has always eluded me, however, is a painted American Flagg! cover. Chaykin was already moving away from mixed media and painting when the first 18 issues were released in three volumes, each with a painted cover. These were: Hard Times, Southern Comfort, and State of the Union. I have longed after any of these covers for (what seems like) eons. Well, Southern Comfort has found its way into my collection. At long last, I own the Chaykin American Flagg! grail I have long sought after! Nothing like a little Southern Comfort to keep a fanboy warm! Social/Sharing |

It's a shame he didn't continue with the paintings. Excellent work, and congrats on the grail!

An outstanding work of art that looks as fresh today as it must've looked on the day he painted it. A fabulous, rare and highly sought after piece from Chaykin's oeuvre, and it was an honor to have you unveil it during our Show & Tell last night. Congrats on the acquisition, Andrew!

Thanks, Ruben. It was a real treat to be on your show. It's not often that I have the chance to share with so many others that share the passion of collecting comic art. It was also a special treat to be able to unveil this piece live to your viewers!
