DescriptionDeath of the Endlessby David Lafuente Published as the cover to David Lafuente Art Book Vol. 2 Ink on comic illustration board 11x17 in. NFS When I first saw this Death of the Endless illustration posted to Spanish artist David Lafuente's Instagram back in 2020 as an Inktober drawing, I reached out to inquire about the availability but received no response. Then a few years later I saw it on the cover of his Art Book Vol. II, and I messaged his reps at The Green Room Comic Art who informed me that it had already sold. A few months later (in August 2023) when Lafuente announced that he would be opening his commission schedule, I reached back to Green Room to get on the commission list and learned the original buyer for this piece had never followed through with payment and I was given a second chance to own art I had previously missed. This is a phenomenon which almost never happens in this hobby, but I've gotten lucky in this way more than once. While I have multiple tattoos and art pieces from the Gaimanverse, this particular piece spoke to me because it's a generational update to the character as it first appeared thirty-four years ago. Death as originally written by Neil Gaiman appears differently to each person she encounters, and so it is canonical to change her look. It occurred to me that if Death was being introduced to a contemporary audience, she would have a more contemporary Goth look –perhaps even Emo and Anime-influenced, and therefore personifying the candy-goth aesthetic that keeps the lights on at Hot Topic in every shopping mall in America. This would be a very natural progression from the Siouxsie Sioux inspired Batcave '82 look that informed her appearance as originated by Dave McKean, Mike Dringenberg & Malcolm Jones III (and later perfected by Chris Bachalo). The manga-esque, stylized exaggeration in David Lafuente's rendering is grounded by a beautiful simplicity that showcases the artist's intuitive understanding of graphic dichotomy. But even more-so, it reveals a deep understanding of youth culture and contemporary youth fashion. This is also apparent in his superb work on Marvel's Runaways. Since today's Goth kids skew younger than the coastal Deathrockers that embraced Sandman in the pre-Vertigo years, David's version is, suitably, a teenager. It is unfortunate that the threats to today's kids (cyberbullying, intolerance, opioids, etc.) provide more context and a greater relevance for a younger personification of Death, but somehow there is a hopefulness undiminished by the grave stones, and even a defiance that hints at a hereafter reward. Emo and Anime-influenced it is! It also has a Chris Bachalo inspired look, stylistically. Death becomes you!

Cool piece! This is the version of Death I'd want to choose in a beat em up arcade game. No idea why that came to mind but it did! Maybe it's the big closed fist and oversized shoes (boots?). I think I mostly associate Lafuente's work on Ultimate Universe Marvel/Spider-Man (after Bagley's main run, and before he came back to finish it) with Bendis - nice to see something different from him.
