Description

Another lucky acquisition that pleased several of my OCA wants. I wanted art by Phil Hester? Check. I wanted something featuring Grendel? Check. I wanted my first ever complete story? Check.

This is page 5 of an 8-page story that appeared in GRENDEL: RED, WHITE & BLACK issue #2 back in 2002. Each of the four issues included five 8page stories, all written by Grendel creator Mat Wagner. Red White & Black was the third 4book series.

The story is a simple story of double-crossing betrayal, but told with flair and a twist that Grendel deserves. The story features great pictures of Argent the wolf, Grendel, Stacey, and Hunter Rose.

Always cool when there's a long stretched out shadow preceding the character's appearence. Great reveal at the end with the reflections on the glasses.

I love the whole set-up of this page, including the shadow announcing Grendel.

The way Argent leaps from the window. The way Grendel appears to be hiding above/behind the light fixture. The shadow approaching Barry. The blades nudging off the glasses. And the different reflections in each lense.

So much black ink used on these pages to great effect.
