It is generally known that of the three key 1940-41 comic books - Whiz Comics #2, Special Edition Comics #1, and Captain Marvel Adventures #1 - to initially feature the bestest-selling comic super-hero character of the 1940s, namely Fawcett's Captain Marvel, who consistently outsold Superman and all the rest, that the team of Jack Kirby [pencils] and Dick Briefer [inks], fulfilling the contract given to Simon & Kirby studio, drew the CM stories in CMA #1. ................ What is lesser known - and NOT acknowledged at Comics.org - is that Joe Simon told the original purchaser (one of his lawyers) of this recreation - and many other people as well over the decades - that he drew the cover for Special Edition Comics #1 in the first place! So essentially he was recreating his own cover art here, NOT C.C. Beck's as listed almost everywhere! Doubtless this posting will reignite the debate...

Too bad we won't know since Bob Kane isn't here to decide who should get credit for creating the original cover. This is a vibrant and iconic image that is all Simon and to pull it off, he needed some intimate understanding of the original!
