DescriptionPrelim to page 17 of New Mutants War Children. This book came out in 2019. I was doing several trips around my 40th birthday, and had considered going to NYCC for the first time. I saw Bill post on socials that he'd have OA from the book available at that show, so I booked a last minute trip for like a day and a half. First day of the show I made Bill's booth my first stop. He's generally not there right away, so I was just hanging out chatting, looking at some of the original pages for the book he had up on his booth wall. Right before Bill arrived around noon, a collector came up and spoke with his rep. Next thing we knew, all the OA for the book sold complete. Normally this would have crushed my soul, but this worked out for a few reasons. First, Bill felt bad for me, which led to them offering me the complete prelims to this book. Bill's process right now is to do prelims, scan everything in, then lightbox the final. So all these prelims are basically the pencils for the book, and in some cases are indistinguishable from the finals. Second, I met Dan. He was next to me in line for about an hour before Bill got there. He was also hoping for a page that wasn't to be. He got to look at all the prelims with me in the stockroom at Bill's booth. I later offered him a page from the set for cost, but he declined. If I hadn't done that random day trip from SD to NYC, there's no telling if I ever would have met Dan. And he became the collector I chatted with online probably more than anybody else. After that, we'd chat at every con we were at together, going over our plans, and looking through one of the many sketchbooks he'd bring to each show. I'll miss connecting with him at shows and talking everything art online. Love ya buddy. Social/Sharing |

I very rarely interact with collectors at shows. So sorry to hear about Dan.

Great way to tribute Dan T, I was just revisiting some old messages we had and how helpful he was with getting me comparable numbers as we often chased similar things. Sounds like it was a fateful way to meet him and meant to cross paths. May Dan T rest in peace.

The guy knew his X-Men! Some might say he knew Cyclops too well to ever be a fan of Scott Summers. The raw energy of Sienkiewicz permeates throughout the page!

A great story about how you met Dan and about this Bill S piece's origin, thanks for sharing! Dan was one of my favs to be around at the east coast shows. He even gave me a ride back to Brooklyn after an especially tough day on me at NYCC one year. He was a very thoughtful and fun guy to be around and will be greatly missed.

Beautiful Andre! This is a memory you will not forget and a great one in regards to meeting him for the first time. The fact that it was Sienkiewicz and New Mutants is so fitting it makes me laugh.

It's a great looking piece, indeed, though an even better memory.
