Mike Grell on Green Arrow has always been my favorite. How could it not be, my favorite artist on my favorite character. Incredible details in the pencils. The pencils are amazing in person. Look at those eyes! Gorgeous piece. I'm not sure what Mike's process was for painted pieces of this era but I'm guessing these are the final pencils. Grell Green Arrow pieces are hard to find, so glad to add this one.

Always read the auction descriptions carefully. I did not on this one, I assumed it was on a board and it is not. It is on a frosted acetate sheet. Still beautiful but I might have bid differently (probably not) had I read the description.

Fantastic! A STUNNING Green Arrow illustration by the legendary Mike Grell. Like most illustrators who painted covers, they typically drew up at least one prelim and then tightened it up to work out the lighting and other aspects. Once they were happy with the overall layout, they typically transferred the prelim onto the final illustration board, either with a lightbox or by freehanding it, then went in with the paints. It sucks that it's not on bristol or any more commonly used paper, but it's still too cool to not get. Congrats, man!

Rightside up or upside down, the effort by Grell to mirror the iconic pose of the longbow hunter is superb.

Very nice Grell pencils and good advice about reading descriptions in auctions. I think you landed a good one regardless of learning certain aspects about it after the fact. congrats!
