The Japanese deprive the Marines of sleep.

Historical note: In addition, one in five Marines on the island at this time suffered from dysentery, according to Wikipedia. The Marines had only 14 days of food of landed supplies and captured Japanese goods after the invasion fleet fled the area and started food rationing.

Sleep deprivation is one of the worst forms of torture, but I suppose great war strategy to wear down your enemies. I love that panel of "Oscar" the submarine surfacing and rearing it's head above the sea surface to fire shells.
