Description

Colleen Doran has been working on this creator-owned series almost her entire life, starting in Junior High. It's been frequently put on hiatus while she pursued other work; this last break has lasted from 2013 to 2026, during which she was busy on projects that won her the Bram Stoker Award, two Eisner Awards, the Locus Award, and more. But now the time for more work on her magnum opus has arrived.

For the uninitiated: This series follows Lianna, an Earth girl who learns she is a Magical Space Princess. She gets help from a motley crew including her older brother Jason, a cop, a Russian author, some super-powered aliens, and Sir Galahad. Quite the melting pot of a story!

At this point in the story, Lianna has felled many of her foes, but catastrophe is brewing for the giant crystalline spaceship holding them, and therefore for Earth. Explaining all the characters and plot filling this DPS's several overlapping scenes would take too long; just go buy the trade paperbacks and read the series.

Doran spent a whole week crafting this two page spread. The grey star effects throughout come from the application of transparent Japanese-sourced adhesive sheets. I picked this up at Dragon Con 2025 prior to publication of the issue from which it comes, but Doran said it was fine to post it. I assume the full issue will be released in 2026.

Colleen is so damn good! Mind blowingly detailed DPS, awesome pickup at Dragon Con! I'm glad she's able to finally get back around to completing A Distant Soil.

Grear use of irregular panels to change the perspective and viewing angles. Some of the payful those angle changes remind me of Little Nemo.
