DescriptionI don't know if they sell Simpsons published covers much in the many years the show has been on the air and their comics have been printed, but I got this cover in 2001 from an eBay auction to support the families of the fallen in the aftermath of 9/11 that was donated by Bill Morrison. Scary times as I was in the middle of traffic on the west coast when the news hit. I called up some guy named Albert as he was the only New Yorker I knew. He said he had a cousin who worked in one of the towers who didn't show up to work on time and thus escaped most of it. Many were speculating it was the end of comics (yet again) with this compounding the comics bust. However, just like the country itself, we rallied to the cause as there were art and comics auctions for charity in the coming months. I remember myself auctioning off the last page splash of What If? #71 by Larry Stroman on eBay that week and shipping the art when they just showed me their paypal receipt they got from the Red Cross. I think it went for a little under $300 which was pretty good back then. This was before eBay set up their eBay cares section. In a way, it might have influenced them to create it to the benefit of many causes after. The comics industry also made a comeback as fantasy and escapism were important to coping when there was a constant threat hanging over everyone.Social/Sharing |

Very interesting cover. I like it. I wonder why it was only for the German MAD magazine? Funny that Morrison included MIllhouse in it.

You don't see many Simpson's covers that are inked. Very nice. Yeah, the world definitely changed that tragic day, and a huge chunk of innocense was lost.

Sad story to go with an otherwise great piece of art. Thanks for sharing, Marcus

Ask me, ask me, ask me
Ask me, ask me, ask me
Because if it's not love
Then it's the bomb, the bomb, the bomb
The bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb
That will bring us together

A touching and understated tribute in the description on the anniversary of one of the saddest single-days in the 21st century. An event like that, as is often said, shows the worst that people can be but can also bring out the best in others. Full credit to you and Bill Morrison for your acts of generosity. I have always been impressed by Bill’s kindness since watching his CAF interview with Bill Cox all those years ago. I once had a page of art he had donated to the Hero Initiative to be auctioned; I gave it away to a friend. Bill Morrison is one of the world’s good guys (as well as being the best Simpsons artist, aside from MG); we need more of them right now.

9/11 . . . back when the entire country was united and we had the support and respect of the entire Western World.

WOW! I've seen Alfred E. Neuman drawn in many strange and nutty ways, but never as an H-Bomb mushroom cloud! Love this MAD cover with the Simpson's running away in horror at Alfred's appearance! Really outstanding work by Bill Morrison! And thanks for the interesting story of how you acquired it. Boy, 9/11 seems like a long time ago. But its effect on the US psyche was not unlike the SImpsons' reaction here. Thanks for sharing!

Very cool cover, and a powerful story. Sept. 11 was devastating. Love seeing good art and good art patrons do good things. Bravo.

Great cover! After 35 years, The Simpsons stands as nothing less than pure Americana.
