DescriptionSticking with a “detective” theme as we begin our mid-October pivot from Batober into a full-fledged Halloween celebration! A barn-burner of a DPS from Brian Bendis’s and Mark Andreyko’s “Torso”, a dramatic retelling of Eliot Ness’s post-Capone career, based on the chilling, grisly real-life events centered around the pursuit of what may have been America’s first documented serial killer. The tale is -very- well served by Bendis’s and Andreyko’s sensibilities as storytellers, and the passion is on full display as a hungry, fully invested Brian Bendis painstakingly drew detailed portraits of 47 people (plus our two detectives) over two pages in a highly stylized, highly inventive approach to beat cop street interrogations…. A technique that Bendis would later leverage on multiple occasions (and to great effect) with Mike Oeming in ‘Powers’. (Nearly fifty person-on-the-street interviews on only two pages… sorry to rob you of your decompressed storytelling dig this time around, Fred! 😜) An unbelievable gift to be able to display this. Beyond grateful. 🙏 Social/Sharing |

I really had to take my time reading the dialogue in every panel, digesting the nuances of each spoken word, or in rarer cases..."words" ;-p
This is so unique, interesting, and cool work to see from Bendis as an artist! I mean, the thumbnail power alone drew me in to want to be the first commentor! It must look great displayed on a wall (if that is infact where it is being enjoyed). Really cool addition Jason, congrats!

Wow, forty-nine completely distinct and unique individuals, and all without making it feel too compressed and claustrophobic! This is a seriously impressive piece, Jason. I really do feel like I'm watching either a 1950's police procedural or a scene from a classic film noir of the era. I'm also taken aback at the fact that this even precedes Powers. Wow! Kudos on a wonderful addition to your ever amazing Brian Bendis collection!

This layout looks like the precursor to all of those talking heads pages we got during his Avengers run. That's not a knock on Bendis's approach to storytelling. It just goes to show how he was developing his formalism in the books he wrote and drew early in his career. Bendis's approach to art was also interesting and his style here makes me think that future collaborators like Michael Gaydos were chosen for their resemblance to Bendis's own style. So nice pickup, of course, but this is also a significant piece that shows the roots of a very popular creator.

Ain't no body Bendis but me

Wow. You just don't see these around much. At this is an ultimate example of Bendis as both writer and artist. Well-done.

You talkin’ to me ? Coz’ I feel like you talkin’ to me…
Very impressive display of heads (…) on this dpS (the S is important here ^^) that, as you perfectly stated, would become a stapple of Bendis’s storytelling arsenal. The most functional part of it for me is how the last panel breaks the grid and its cadence when that witness says he has seen the broad.
Torso was so different from anything else at the time and this is a great example why (it began a very successful career for Bendis in him being noticed and your love affair with him…I meant his work, obviously ^^).
(And to clarify, I do love decompressed storytelling when done right and Bendis is the king of it. Also, in Asia, they have a thing called Manga where it is the basis of-their-storytelling ;)
