DescriptionDeath in Vienna, 1917by George Pratt (Jan. 2024) After Egon Schiele Conte on paper, 9 x 12 in. Not for Sale Ahead of OAX 2024, George Pratt opened his commission list and I leapt at the chance. My request was an art history reference piece of the artist's choice, substituting Death of the Endless for the figure in the original artwork. George chose Egon Schiele's Female Nude on Her Stomach, 1917. Since both artists work with Conté crayons Schiele is a great pick for Pratt's style and the color choice is both tactful and appropriate for the original time period, but also the world of Vertigo. George Pratt is one of the absolute greatest technicians to ever work in comics and his impeccable style is much closer to fine art than commercial illustration. I treasure this piece. Schiele's original is on the next slide. That image is not very high resolution, I apologize. Social/Sharing |

A great presentation of Pratt's skill and mindset. He would have found himself at home admidst the guilds over a hundred years ago struggling against political forces working against the arts and human expression. I guess he's 100 years late or 1 year early to fight that fight.

Excellent Pratt piece and an interesting concept for the inspiration. I like how he modernized it a bit by having Death in a similar pose but seemingly in a more comfortable position and supported by actual furniture! :) - great piece, Pratt brings the fine art eye and skillset to the world of comics and we're all luckier for it. congrats!

I love that couch (which is probably more mid-century than Bauhaus). It sort of doubles as padded cel symbolism in a kind of commentary on the insanity of the contemplation of death —or as Damian Hirst might phrase it, "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living;" where as Death, herself, seems a bit bored.

George Pratt, the fine artist who cometimes works as an illustrator, and an incredibly amazing one at that. A wonderful looking piece with far stronger anatomy than Schiele's original. Also, I love the very repressed color palette.

Wow what a perfect combination. George hit a home run with this one. Love all those colors flecks of red or green- really called back to the Schiele, Congrats.
