DescriptionFinally getting around to posting up some of the sweet art I picked up at this year's Summer Con. And while I can't say I'm a huge fan of Doctor Strange, when I saw this page being available, I just knew I had to get it.I was actually quite surprised to see artist Chris Warner still had any of his original art that was from this far back. This comes from the issue that introduced the alien sorcerer Urthona (although, he isn't on this specific page). When I asked Chris Warner about it, he told me that the thing he and writer Peter Gillis always heard from other creators, is that all the things that they loved about Doctor Strange, were also the the things that never allowed a series with him to last for very long. They all did the same things that didn't work the last time, when working on the character, so they wanted to do things differently, such as having Doc battle sorcerers from other worlds, not just "other dimensions." They wanted to add a little more sci-fi to the mystical world of Doctor Strange, while still keeping things familiar enough that you know you are still reading a Doctor Strange story. This page certainly lives up to all of what he said. It has you asking nothing but questions. Why is Morganna Blessing dressed in the Doc's garb? What just happened to his mansion? Where is Doctor Strange and how did he end up at death's doorstep? Look at just how much story points they squeezed into just a mere six panels. And I love the detail Warner puts into his faces. The shots in the second and final panels really spotlight this. This also happens to be some of the earliest ink work of well-known inker Randy Emberlin. So, just tons of very cool things abound on this page! When you are working on a character called "Doctor Strange," you should be expecting to see things that are out of the ordinary and this page certainly feels very appropriately "strange." Which, paradoxically, makes it feel comfortably familiar. And that's what any good page of comic art should do! Social/Sharing |

The stache and the hairy chest was so macho! Cliffhanger of an end page. You knew Strange was going to get through this phase and still come out with a masculine musk about him!
