DescriptionLet me start by saying the '80s were my jam. That’s when I first got into collecting comic books. Back then, I mainly gravitated toward certain characters. But by the mid-'80s, I started to appreciate the artists behind the books. Byrne, Frenz, and Layton were at the top of my list. But Zeck? Zeck made the best covers of that decade. So going into ’25, I wanted to be ready if one ever came available. And sure enough this cover came up. Sure, there’s some use of negative space. Awkward pose? Maybe. But that’s just how he drew Cap for this particular cover. Wait… was this swiped from the Bonkers ad or was it the other way around? So many questions. But for me? I love this cover. Captain America front and center, with Trapster and Whirlwind looming in the background. The detail and shading on Cap trapped, in peril, stuck to the floor are pure Zeck. It’s a typical '80s filler storyline, and the Zeck/Beatty combo absolutely nailed it. Special thanks to James Pascoe for helping out on the overlay. Social/Sharing |

Sweet! Any Zeck Cap cover is wall worthy, and this one is definitely a classic - love it. Huge congrats! I never noticed the Bonkers ad comparison before either, that's wild...

Sweet Zeck / Beatty cover! The Whirlwind and Paste Pot Pete elements only enhance the Cap figure's struggle!

I've always loved this cover. Especially for how Zeck spotted the shadow on Cap's left side (our right) and Beatty's embellishment of it. It always gave his figure such form and solidity. Congrats on adding a classic artist and character combo to your collection, Alex!

When you showed this cover on your Comic Art 101. I thought...how the hell did I miss this. But this was sold back in June '21. I started buying OA a few months after. Oh well...

Fabulous Captain America cover by the great Mike Zeck. Cap is surprised and thrown off balance here by the Trapster and Whirlwind. But you know and I know that one minute later he'll be slamming those two villains into the ground. Great pick-up, congrats!

I never knew about the Bonkers ad. I assumed ithe Bonkers ad was swiped from Mike since the ad didn't appear on Marvel's back covers until Cap #329 so I asked Mike about it. Here's a little insight for you: "That ad was most certainly rendered at Neal Adam's Continuity Studios, but not by Neal. That was another one of those Cap covers that wasn't supposed to be mine. Neary penciled one, then Gruenwald asked me to redo it." So, there you go! A little bonus piece of history. BTW - The first cover that Neary penciled and then Mike re-drew was the classic #321 cover with Cap firing a machine gun.

Nice...I just remember it was brought up over in the facebook chat. And the consensus was that the add swiped Zeck. The ad appeared the following year. Appreciate the backstory.

Awesome score Alex! Almost all Zeck covers are pretty great, but a Zeck Cap cover is a whole different level of amazing. Achievement unlocked.
