DescriptionFrom the WHO WE ARE storyline in the Astonishing X-Men series (2018) comes this page reuniting the remaining members of the Original X-Men Team, art by Travel Foreman and story by Matthew Rosenberg. At this point in the X-Men lore, most of this team has experienced death and resurrection in some form. Jean has been recently resurrected from her death by the hands of Magneto/Xorn (New X-Men #150, 2004); and in the Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey series (2018) brought back to life by the Phoenix Force. Angel/Archangel experiences a death of some kind in Uncanny X-Force #18 (2012) by Psylocke implanting him with the Life Seed to overtake the Apocalypse Death Seed inside him where Archangel has taken full control in the Dark Angel Saga. Beast will know death years later in the X-Force series, during the Fall of X era in issue #50 (2024), where one version of Beast (retro good version) kills the demented version which technically stems from the Beast we see here. Iceman is well . . . Iceman. And missing from this table is Cyclops, who after the Phoenix Force over took him, kills Professor X in Avengers vs X-Men #11 (2012), he gets depowered by Hope and Scarlet Witch in Uncanny X-Men #19 (2012), and ultimately dies from the Terrigen Mist conflict with the Inhumans, in Death of X (2016/2017). I love that I have pages from most of these death sequence storylines in some respect. Jean Grey can’t catch a break as she is playing cat and mouse with death and timing is off for her and Scott’s reunion; she dies, he quits, she’s reborn, she dies, he dies, she come back and ultimately has to choose to either save him and reunite with the Phoenix force or keep him dead. As you can see he is missing from the table for this reunion. The story continues to find out that Professor Xavier is only dead in his physical body. He soon joins this reunion, living in the body of Fantomex (as we learn earlier in this Astonishing X-Men series, in the storyline called A MAN CALLED X, 2018, since he had been thought gone/dead in 2012 AVX storyline). He then has them help with a mission against an old foe, Lucifer (the guy that crippled Prof X in X-Men #9, 1965), who is an alien that inhabits people and hive minds them to be at peace by giving themselves into him. It’s a great storyline and very happy to have a page from this piece of the X Soap-Opera Drama. I especially enjoy this page for two reasons, it gives off the IT (Stephen King) reunion vibe and look as they all meet after a long often sad history with each other. And a nice panel of poring some good wine. I really enjoy wine and pairing it with food as I cook often. Going wine tasting is a treat and vacation for me; I lived in the Santa Maria area for about a year working on JOHN ADAMS and BATTLE OF RED CLIFF (at CAFE FX vfx facility) and spent many weekends enjoying wine in that region. I also really enjoy that Angel has to hold back, since he is holding off his other half Archangel constantly and can’t give into ant libations because of it, because if he comes out, he isn’t very nice. And we get some fantastic scenes with him later, showing just that. This was a fun story to revisit and the bottom panel with all the characters enjoying dinner together and reminiscing about old times and the full team is absolutely great. The art and character work in this quiet and growing louder scene is beautifully done to go with a really fun and hard story. CHEERS! Social/Sharing |

One page to savor over a glass of wine as Foreman's art ages as well as the truism that Cyclops gets Professor X killed more often than any other team leader.

I like Travel's pencil work, Nice addition! Also, I appreciate you fully explaining/recapping how the storyline got to this point for this reunion, I even read it twice to make sure I grasped it all ha :)
