Description

At this time, DC was publishing the Shadow. That said, I don't think of the Shadow as a DC character as he first appeared in comics from Street & Smith in 1940 - so I am happy to add this great piece to my 'Company Crossover' theme gallery.
There were two Batman/Shadow stories in the 1970s - Batman 253 and Batman 259.

I can't quite remember, but likely I picked this page up from eBay back in the day - it was hard to go wrong back then - but this was one I am very happy about snagging.

Lots of elements I like:
- Features both Batman and the Shadow prominently
- Has a pair of cool landscape panels
- A 'reveal' ["Spoiler Alert"]
- End page
- Dedication, in this case to Bill Finger

The Shadow's intense stare is great!  Even with it being an end page, he leaves Batman with a message and pulls a fast one by dipping out on Batman before Batman can pull the same move.  Even back in the 70's they wanted to give Bill Finger the credit.  If it was not allowed on the first page, they'd do it at the end.

Mark, that is one of the coolest pages ever drawn.  Wow!

It does feel like a strange crossover. But perhaps not for the 1970s (when Killraven could crossover with Spider-Man). Nevertheless, this is a nice page with great Giordano inks, who really makes the eyes and expressions of the Shadow work in the centre of the page. Great fun as well, with the Shadow - of all characters - managing to put a smile on Batman's face.

Wow! What a pulp celebration with Batman's roots in the pulps and Bill Finger's pulp inspiration in co-creating Batman. Not only perfect, but glorious!

wow, what an excellent page! I love that 2 horizontal panel sequence in the middle of the page, especially that close up of Shadow's eyes. And the dedication to Bill Finger is pretty special as well. congrats!

You snagged a page from Batman's first meeting with the Shadow containing both characters, it was drawn by Novick & Giordano, who were in peak form, and it's from a story that was published in one of DC's 100-Page Super Spectaculars (which I absolutely loved back in the day). From the perspective of nostalgia, this one is hard to beat. Cheers!

Thats a great page Mark!

I have the three key pages of the first Shadow/Batman crossover by Novick/Girodano in Batman 253 (splash page and the last 2 pages where first meets the Batman).

Your page is very similar...Awesome!!!

Superb page with those similar, but still very different "creatures of the night2 "heroes"(= vigilantes, without law) that fight restless and often very violent (Bats) or final (The Shadow) ! Big congrats for this 70s treasure piece!
