DescriptionAll New!One Man Against a Galactic Empire! “Well, Buster, Peter Quill never dies easily--and that goes double for Starlord!” Like the greatest space fantasy adventure film of all-time playing on movie screens across the land that year, a story just as grand had emerged on the racks when the first legendary pairing of Chris Claremont, John Byrne, Terry Austin & Tom Orzechowski teamed up to produce Marvel Preview (Presents Star-Lord) #11 in the Summer of 1977, and that summer ruled! The B&W magazine was a singular work that would beget the Uncanny X-Men in the form, for many, that would define them. As much as I enjoyed the Guardians of the Galaxy movie, this version is possibly the greatest comicbook movie never produced, and it means a ton to finally find a page from that epic story! On the page: Infiltrating the ruling merchant lord Kyras Shakati’s palace on a floating city of Cinnibar, Starlord, Kip & Sandy were forced into a trap by Shakati’s regenerating Melyan Construct statues, and were experiencing hallucinations within Shakati’s Telempathic Crystal. Lifelike hallucinations based on Kip Hölm’s recent battle with a King Kraken aboard his parent’s outrigger, the Sea Fang. Starlord drives the harpoon deep into the beastie’s eye and brain, but its death throes thrash about the Windhölme sea, and once again Kip is forced to endure the death of his parents! Losing his parents can be tough, but he grows up to fight crime as Whaleman.

I think it could have been the art checklist in the back of the Art of John Byrne that made me aware of this magazine, I was floored when I finally found that issue and opened it up to see that amazing art in glorious black and white. Byrne/Austin really announced their arrival in a big way. CONGRATS!!!

This is the team! This is the time period! They took Star-Lord and made him the best he's ever looked.

That was such a great one shot. And the reprint even featured a Golden/austin framing sequence.

Nice, earlu Star-Lord page. The figure falling backwards in the penultimate panel really adds to the dynamic sense of tipping in the dramatic final panel.

Byrne, Austin and Claremont working together right before they started on the UXM legendary run. Nuff said! As good as it gets!

I remember trying to track down some of these old Byrne projects to read when I was a kid. They were tough to find before Ebay and the internet existed. Still love his early style.

Somehow I managed to miss the book when it was first published and only read it after Claremont, Byrne and Austin were already working on Uncanny X-Men. I picked a copy up much later but still found it very enjoyable. Haven't seen any art from the book until you posted this page. It's a terrific page with great action. Love Peter Quill's courage here and the fantastic action-packed panels. Phenomenal pick-up, congrats!
