Description

John Byrne. Alpha Flight. This is a beautiful cover. I've had this cover for a bit, and it's finally time that I post it. And posting today for a reason, as it's John Cassaday's birthday.

Marvel Age was an incredible series that promoted upcoming events and new series. Marvel Age #2 promoted the then upcoming Alpha Flight series by John Byrne. This was initially a cover for Alpha Flight #1, but then Byrne decided to add many more characters for Alpha Flight #1 and made it more fun. I think that this cover is just as good as the actual #1. Some may not, but I do. It's beautiful.

One thing that is a double edged sword is that this was a cover that John Cassaday had. It's a reminder that John is no longer with us. But it's a reminder of John and our friendship, and that is comforting.

Those old Marvel Age covers are very nostalgic for me. This was the first glimpse that I got of Alpha Flight. After the cover to #1, I'd peg this as my favorite AF cover!

Great introductory image!  Byrne got us pumped for the new #1 X-Men adjacent team with this image!  Game recognizes game!

Alpha Flight was (is) a great concept.  Interesting characters, different location from the usual NY base, great visuals.  This is one of the best depiction of the classic team

It's always bittersweet for me when I see one of my old pieces pop up.  While it's always nice to see them again, there's also the understandable pangs of regret that one gets about selling something that he perhaps should never have sold.  At the time, it was the most money I ever got for a piece of art (but a bargain in today's market).  I paid $200 for it back in 1987 and sold it about 5-6 years later.  Anyway, as per your description, I'm in the camp that thinks this is as good (or even better) than the actualy AF #1 cover.  It was also used as a house ad and promo poster.  So in terms of publication and exposure, this piece got a lot more mileage than that actual #1 cover.  I wasn't a huge fan of anything Byrne did after his glorious X-Men run, but I made an exception for this one.  So congrats and enjoy!  It really is a magnificent Byrne example.

I know the feeling of selling one of your babies and then seeing it later.  The memory is always strong.  And thank you for the reminder on the poster.  I forgot about that.

Love when a piece of artwork has multiple layers of meaning.  For me this is a super nostalgic, grail-worthy piece that represents the magic of early 80s Marvel (which Marvel Age tapped into so well, I loved that mag!) and the excitement of discovering that world as a child.  Congrats!

Yeah, Marvel Age was great at the time.  Outside of CBG, there were few places to get news.  Marvel Age filled that gap.
