Description197311 x 17in The High Evolutionary returns Warlock to his birth cocoon Two fine artists, Gil Kane (pencils) and Tom Sutton (inks), combined forces on this page from the fifth issue of Warlock's first self-titled series that came out in 1973 following two "try-out" issues in Marvel Premiere. The page features the cosmic being known as the High Evolutionary returning Warlock to his birth cocoon. This harkens back to Warlock's first appearances as "Him" in Fantastic Four #66 and #67 (1967) in which the character emerged from a cocoon. The High Evolutionary made his debut in Thor #134 (1966). Both Warlock and the High Evolutionary made their live action debut in the hit 2023 MCU film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023). The High Evolutionary created "Counter Earth", a duplicate of the traditional Marvel Earth that exists on the other side of the sun. Most of the first run of Warlock, which included Marvel Premiere #1 and #2 and Warlock #1-#8, took place on Counter Earth. Following this run, a couple of years later Jim Starlin famously evolved Warlock into "Adam Warlock" and continued his story in Strange Tales #178-#181 and Warlock #9-#15. Kane was always one of the best in the business at depicting dramatic scenes like this one and his work looked particularly strong when inked by the talented Sutton. About Gil Kane Gil Kane is one of the most prolific artists in the history of the comic book medium. Already elevated to legendary status for his work at DC during the Silver Age on Green Lantern and Atom, he subsequently became Marvel's #1 cover artist during the 1970s. Kane provided some of the most important covers of the Marvel Bronze Age, including such classic covers as Amazing Spider-Man #129 introducing Punisher (along with Romita), Giant-Size X-Men #1 and X-Men #94 (along with Cockrum), Marvel Premiere #15 (with Dick Giordano). Additionally, Kane drew some of the most memorable Marvel stories of the era, including the famous anti-drug trilogy in Amazing Spider-Man #96-98, Spidey's landmark 100th issue, the introduction of Morbius in #101, and the death of Gwen Stacy and the Green Goblin in #121 and #122. The list could literally go on and on. Kane is one of the most important and collected artists who ever worked in comics. The artist passed away in 2000 when he was 73. About Adam Warlock Adam Warlock was first introduced as the newly born creature Him in the pages of Fantastic Four #66-#67 (1967), created by the legendary team of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The character's first full appearance was two years later in Thor #165. Roy Thomas and Gil Kane evolved the character into Warlock in Marvel Premiere #1 (1972) and introduced him into his own series, which ran for eight issues in 1972-1973. Two years later, Jim Starlin revived the character and evolved him further into Adam Warlock, the ultimate Marvel cosmic protector who became a key player in Starlin's epic first "Thanos Saga". Although short-lived, the character achieved cult status and was brought back for a much longer run in the 1990s and has appeared throughout the 21st Century in a variety of cosmic-themed stories, mostly written by Starlin. Warlock made his long-awaited debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2023's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. He's expected to return. Social/Sharing |

Great dynamic page. Kane's poses are fantastic, and Sutton's inks were great on that run.

This is where his action anatomy really took off as the human figure stretches with power in the action scenes that feel more legendary when looking back upon this time period. This Gil Kane took his imagination from DC over to Marvel and was so influential in the look Marvel wanted for all their books.
