Description

"When It's Time to Die...." Tower Comics. Cover date August 1966. Writer and letterer unknown.

A "Central Intelligence" team and the resistance destroy Nazi guns capable of destroying the Allied invasion forces in a costly mission.

Tower Comics published only three issues of Fight The Enemy, running 1966 to 1967. Tower Comics itself operated for a short period, 1965-69, and is best known for Wally Wood's T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents.

Historical note: If the phrase "Central Intelligence" refers to the CIA, it wasn't created until 1947 in response to the intensifying Cold War against Soviet communism and its Iron Curtain of dictatorship. Its predecessor during World War II was the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) under the Joint Chiefs and Staff. President Truman abolished the OSS in 1945 with the Departments of State and War absorbing its units and missions.

Grandenetti's spotting of blacks to emphasize the high contrast lighting technique is absolutely superb!

No time to die!  A great way to start off a series where the mission is do or die!

Enquiring minds want to know: Who's Marie? Where did he leave her? Why is he thinking of going back for her?

Maria is the leader of the resistance unit. She is with her resistance unit holding off enemy soldiers in the fortress. She and the rest of her unit are wiped out. She is last seen in the story saying "We can't hold off these pigs any longer!" The guy in the page was biased that women didn't have what it takes to fight in a war and should stay at home.

I've added story pages about his disagreement with Maria to the additional images.

No wonder the Nazis lost the war. They used most of their steel supply on door hinges ;)

Hahaha! Thanks, Rick! They also used up their paint on swastika symbols!

Maria Maria! Sweet looking 6-panel page with awesome lighting. Might be the first time I've seen Giacoia's inks over Grandenetti, they are great!

Presumption is she didn't make it. She's last seen with her resistance group holding off enemy soldiers saying "we can't hold off these pigs any longer!" (Some Maria published pages in additional images.)

One of my pet peeves is OA that relies on the color to show day and night. This page EXCELS at doing that and I love every part of it. Beauty.

and I realize I worded the comment poorly - your page excels at NOT relying on the coloring!
