John Pederson Jr. was active as an SF illustrator between 1957 and 1973, primarily as a cover artist. He produced more than 30 covers, mainly for Galaxy and If. According to Mike Ashley, this piece for Ted White's always cash-starved Amazing was only the second original cover White managed to commission for his books; he'd previously relied on reprints from European magazines.

Heritage attributed this illustration to a short story called "A Skip in Time," which is frankly awful, but having read it I see no connection at all.

Pederson was extremely talented and deserves a bigger profile. His SF work is always tight and carefully delineated. I've seen examples of his other work, landscapes and aeronautical subjects; they are more painterly and, really, pretty damned fabulous. SF paid the bills, but he really shone on subjects that interested him personally.

I love the imagination applied. Even though the space race had ended by 1970, there was still a lot of fascination with human achievement and what else could be out there.

Love the subtle vibes of existential...I dunno - sadness? ennui? - as he drifts in his space salon hairdryer. Seriously, cool and haunting.
