Description

The design work (i.e. the strip on the left) and everything else screams New Yorker cover where the artist Alan Dun was among the most published cartoonists. I believe this was done for a travelling exhibit of art or cartoon art to promote war bonds - which is too bad as it succinctly delineates the problem the New Yorker faced in terms of changing its style and focus as America entered the war- and their sophisticated readers' boats were swamped by the grim reality of the war against fascism

Absolutely fantastic piece. Was this darkly satirical piece one that Alan knew to never bother showing the editors, or could it have actually gotten published? Almost a Nat'l Lampoon item in its mocking effrontery.
