Jimmy Swinnerton was one of early comics creators who pioneered the development of the newspaper comic strip in San Francisco starting in the early 1890s.

In this 1919 newspaper comic strip daily Swinnerton has Mister Jack extolling the virtues of reading a book. Note what Jack be reading !!
