JOHAN AND PEEWIT
Indian ink on paper. Front cover for the newspaper Spirou n°1548, 1967. Signed. 12,6 x 18,1 in.

This is one of the only illustrations of Johan and Peewit having a slight religions connotation. This illustration reminds us, in more than one regard, of the Tintin greetings cards from the 40s as well as some covers of the Le Petit Vingtième newspaper and the Tintin comic, representing Tintin visiting church either alone or with friends. It is the only illustration in the entire series showing all of the protagonists. Peyo, moreover, very rarely had the privilege of making the cover of Spirou, even less frequently with this series. It marks the return of
Johan and Peewit in the pages of the newspaper after a long absence lasting for more than 5 years. It was to mark the pre-publication of Johan and Peewit’s thirteenth and final story, Maltrochu’s Spell. The proceeds from the sale of this work will go to Unicef, the United Nations Fund for Children. This not-for-profit public charity association was founded in 1946. This agency works under the aegis of the United Nations (UN), and has a global presence in over 150 countries, with the purpose of ensuring that all children have access to healthcare, education, equality and protection. Due to the sale of this work being for charity, Artcurial Briest- Poulain-F.Tajan shall not collect any fees above the auction price.

Il s’agit d’une des seules illustrations de Johan et Pirlouit ayant une légère connotation religieuse. En effet, tous les protagonistes se dirigent vers la chapelle du château, pour
célébrer Noël et la venue de l’enfant Jésus. Le journal Spirou comme tous les journaux pour la jeunesse avaient alors une connotation et implication catholique forte. Cette illustration rappelle à plus d’un titre les cartes neige Tintin des années 40 ainsi que quelques couvertures du journal Le Petit Vingtième Couverture du Journal Spirou n°1548. et du journal Tintin, représentant Tintin se rendant à l’église seul ou avec ses amis. Cette illustration a une connotation catholique très discrète puisque la croix et le vitrail n’apparaissent que pour moitié, l’autre moitié étant soit cachée, soit hors champ ; elle est de ce fait plus un prétexte à représenter tous les héros de la série unis et réunis.
C’est la seule illustration de toute la série représentant tous ses protagonistes. Peyo a par ailleurs très rarement eu le privilège de faire la couverture du journal Spirou, encore moins pour cette série. Il s’agit ici des 2 plats de la couverture du journal, chose d’autant plus exceptionnelle, unique pour Peyo. Cette illustration publiée en couverture du journal Spirou est importante à plus d’un titre dans la carrière de Peyo car elle marque le retour de Johan et Pirlouit dans les pages du journal après une longue absence de plus de 5 ans. Elle annonce le début de la prépublication de la treizième et dernière histoire de Johan et Pirlouit Le Sortilège de Maltrochu.

La vente de cette oeuvre sera faite au profit de L’Unicef, Fonds des Nations unies pour l’enfance. Cette association à but non lucratif et reconnue d’utilité publique est née en 1946. C’est une agence de l’Organisation des Nations unies (ONU), implantée dans plus de 150 pays d’intervention, qui a pour vocation d’assurer à chaque enfant, santé, éducation, égalité et protection. En raison du caractère caritatif de la vente de cette oeuvre, Artcurial Briest-Poulain-F.Tajan ne prendra aucun frais en sus des enchères.
