Description

JOHAN AND PEEWIT
THE CURSED COUNTRY
Indian ink on paper. Cover pages. Dupuis Publishing, 1964. 13,4 x 18,5 in.

Estimation : 30 000 - 50 000 €

This illustration is the final panel from the 45th strip of the album. A large part of the humour in this album is down to the comprehension, or rather lack of comprehension, of the Smurf’s language. Throughout the entire album Peewit tries to understand the mysterious phrase uttered by the Smurf which appeared at the beginning of the album: “the smurf that smurfs smurf”. The mystery will only become totally clear on page 39 of the album: the precise translation being “the dragon that breathes fire”. In the same manner, this illustration retains this enigma, Johan, Peewit, the king and a Smurf all fleeing the fire and smoke, without the reader understanding exactly from where these originate. This flyleaf illustration is the only one to include both the king and a Smurf. The density and extensive use of black is superb and makes this illustration one of the finest.
