DescriptionJOHAN ET PIRLOUITL’ANNEAU DES CASTELLAC Encre de Chine pour la couverture de cet album, 11ème album de la série, publié en 1962 aux éditions Dupuis. Format : 40,7 x 30,2 cm. Encadrée. Crayonné de mise en couleur sur calque, réalisé par Janine Culliford. 40 x 28 cm. Encadré. Estimation : 80 000 — 100 000 € Calque de mise en couleur aux crayons. Si la couverture de La Flûte à Six Schtroumpfs est tout entière tournée vers le merveilleux, celle de « L’Anneau des Castellac » est elle principalement focalisée sur le Moyen-Âge, période dans laquelle Johan et Pirlouit vivent leurs aventures. La présence du Pont-levis, des fortifications et de la harpe ancrent cette couverture dans cette époque que l’on peut situer autour du XIème siècle. La détermination de Johan contraste avec la joie de Pirlouit : cet album est en effet centré sur ce dernier, devenu au fil des albums le véritable faire-valoir de Johan. De toutes les couvertures de la série, il s’agit d’une des plus importantes tant par sa taille – certaines couvertures comme Le Sire de Montrésor ou encore Le Pays Maudit sont de petite taille – que par la maîtrise de sa composition et de son style. Estimate : 80 000 — 100 000 € Whilst the cover of The Smurfs and the Magic Flute focuses entirely on mystery, the cover of “The Ring of Castellac” primarily focuses on the Middle Ages, a period during which Johan and Peewit live out their adventures. The presence of the drawbridge, the forts and the harp firmly place this album cover into a period which can be estimated at around the 11th Century. The determination on Johan’s face is in stark contrast to the joy shown by Peewit: this album is indeed focussed around the latter, who became Johan’s stooge throughout the albums. Of all covers from this series, this is one of the most important, both in terms of its size – certain covers such as The Earl of Montrésor or The Cursed Country are small – and by the mastery in its composition and style. To me this is thé most beautiful piece of the auction. An auction that will, finally, confirm Peyo as one of the greatest Masters ever.
