DescriptionRay Bailey is another nearly forgotten artist of the 1940's-1960's. He was the son of Ray W. Bailey, a reporter for a New York paper. He began his career working for the Fleischer studios in Manhattan, working on Betty Boop and Popeye before moving to strips as an assistant to Gus Edson on The Gumps. But, like many cartoonists of that period, Milton Caniff was a big influence and he eventually came to assists Caniff on Terry and the Pirates and Male Call where he took on a distinctive style. After leaving Terry and the Pirates, in 1942, he created his own strip (Vesta West) and then the aviation comic Bruce Gentry for the New York Post Syndicate (1945). That became very popular, and was made into a movie serial in 1949. But it is his work on Tom Corbet : Space Cadet from 1951- 1953 that he is best known for. After leaving Tom Corbet, Bailey did a lot of work for Harvey (see my Romance art section) and drew several Steve Canyon books for Dell/Four Color, as well as ghosting the daily comic in 1960, in his Caniff style. He continued to work for Dell doing a number of TV show adaptations, including The Gray Ghost and Ripcord, as well as Turok, Son of Stone. As Dell became King, Bailey drew Mandrake the Magician and ghost and mystery jobsfor Ghostly Haunts, Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery and The Twilight Zone This page comes from his last work in the comic book field done for Tower Comics' U.N.D.E.R.S.E.A. Agent #1 in 1966 - a sort-of splash showing the villain of the book, the evil Yang. If you read his comments on the page, Bailey boasts of "authentic drawing of deep water fish". Social/Sharing |
