DescriptionGIRAUD Jean (1938-2012) BLUEBERRY . Encre de Chine pour la planche 35 de l'album « L'aigle solitaire », 3ème album de la série, publié en 1967 aux éditions Dargaud. Prépublication dans le journal Pilote en 1964. 39,3 x 31 cm.I suppose a proper Giraud-Moebius collector isn't going to be terribly interested in the early Blueberry stories. Not only are these pages relatively small, they also bear all the marks of art created solely for production (not for display). There's also the fact that the artist hadn't really settled into a line which was recognizably "his". But there are still some pages in L'aigle solitaire (Lone Eagle) where you can see the later artist and his visually arresting compositions. This is one of the better pages from the album in question though certainly not the best. The story as a whole can be fairly summarized as a pastiche-homage to John Ford and his Calvary trilogy (in particular Fort Apache). This is from the third album in the series. Six years later and Giraud would be producing comics like Chihuahua Pearl and Ballad for a Coffin. I would much prefer a page from Le Garage hermétique but a good page from that would cost at least twice as much as this one (as would a decent Blueberry page). So maybe one of these days. Definitely one of the best pages from that album. A Jijé-ish Giraud finding his own, great way.

So much to enjoy in this early page from Giraud! The staging, landscapes, mug shots, and perspectives are just wonderful. It's great to see how he mastered the form so early in his career.

You're too modest, here! Gir's graphics go up by leaps and bounds from the beginings and this is a finely constructed page, full of tension and action!
