When Classics Illustrated introduced painted covers in 1951, they made a big splash on the comic market. Several excellent artists worked on CI titles in the 50s and early 60s. Unfortunately, many of the cover artists are still not identified. The paintings may be kitchy, but they are evocative, and many are well executed. For an excellent, well-written and heavily illustrated history of Classics Illustrated, se William B. Jones´ Classics Illustrated. A Cultural History (revised ed. 2011).
