Complete 45-page story from "Joan of Arc", Classics Illustrated No. 78 (Gilberton, December 1950). " No artist did more to define the Classics Illustrated house style in the late 1940s than Henry Carl Kiefer (15 April 1890 - 10 May 1957, USA). Kiefer received his artistic training at the Atelier Julian in Paris. After Iger assumed responsibility for Kantner´s series, Kiefer quickly became, along with Alex A. Blum, one of the two dominant Classics Illustrated artists. A good candidate for Kiefer´s finest Gilberton effort is " Joan of Arc ". Throughout the biography, skillfully scripted by Sam Willingsky, the artist took obvious pains with the composition of both individual panels and full-page illustrations depicting battle scenes and Joan´s martyrdom " ( from the excellent book about Classics Illustrated by William B. Jones). The three splash pages done on coquille board may very well be the highlights of the story. H.C.Kiefer´s own inks are just fine but I can´t help thinking what these pages would have looked like with a young Wallace Wood inking them. A beautiful maiden, knights in armor and Medieval castles. Just imagine!
