The original Suicide Squad series was written by John Ostrander and Kim Yale. This incarnation of the Squad ran from 1987 until 1992. It ran for 66 issues with issue #67 added to the end of the run in 2010.
With its motley cast, the Squad often crossed over to other D.C. Universe events, including Legends, War of the Gods, and, Blackest Night in 2010.
The Suicide Squad was also at the heart of the status changing Janus Directive, which impacted the Squad, Checkmate, Captain Atom, Manhunter, and Firestorm. Ostrander wrote three of those series which no doubt helped keep the story tight and cohesive.
There was also a one off book titled Doom Patrol and Suicide Squad Special #1 written by John Ostrander & Paul Kupperberg.
Ostrander's success on the series has spawned a follow up limited series titled 'Suicide Squad: Raise the Flag'. The series tied up a storyline with key character Rick Flagg. D.C. also published a one off titled, 'Suicide Squad: War Crimes Special' in 2016 to coincide with the series' namesake film. Both follow up titles were penned by Ostrander.
The legacy of the series can be felt in later titles such as The Liberty Project, Villains United, and Gail Simone's run on Secret Six.
