Blum, Alex A. "The White Company" (Classics Ill)
Complete 44-page story from Classics Illustrated No. 102 ( December 1952 ). Sharing with Henry C. Kiefer the honors for ubiquity at Gilberton in the late 1940s and early 1950s was Alex Anthony Blum (1889-1969), an artist whose training as an etcher left its unique stamp on more than 20 Classics Illustrated titles. Around 1938 Blum signed on with the Eisner-Iger shop; it was an association that lasted until 1953. Blum´s work is as distinctly ideosyncratic as Kiefer´s; both have a marked old-fashioned European quaintness about them. For "The White Company", a tale of 15th-century derring-do by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Blum drew and inked striking single-pages and a wondrous centerfold splash of sword-wielding combatants against clean, uncluttered backgrounds. From 1953 to 1957 the veteran was hired as art director for Classics Illustrated. Colleagues respected him and remembered him fondly, but the final assessment belongs to Norman Nodel, who lauded Blum as "a real gentleman, a prince of a man."
