Philippe Labaune Gallery is pleased to present "Crepax," an exhibition of drawings by the late Italian artist Guido Crepax opening Thursday, March 9, 2023. On view is a selection of the original strips and illustrations made by the artist between 1966 and 2000 for several of his most celebrated erotic series and graphic novel adaptations. "Crepax" offers an expansive overview of three decades of poetic, hallucinogenic tales that earned worldwide acclaim for their elegant, ornate drawings that embraced eroticism and fetishism while touching on delicate subjects such as bisexuality, sadomasochism, and the human condition. Through the eyes of Valentina Roselli, a Milanese photojournalist with a propensity for surreal BDSM, and other of his most notable heroines, Guido Crepax provides a nuanced exploration into the female psyche and the discordance between a woman’s authentic carnal, emotional desires and the conservative gender roles that dominated the era. His narrative innovations, such as the dilation of pages into miniature vignettes to lengthen the action or the depiction of events separated in both place and time, constitute unrivaled representations of the spirit of the 60s and 70s amid the sexual revolution that challenged enduring traditions of the Western world.
